Feelings 101: what your feelings are trying to tell you

A gentle guide to noticing feelings without judging yourself or needing to fix everything straight away.

Feelings can be loud, confusing, or hard to name. They can also change quickly. A feeling is something you are experiencing; it is not your whole identity, and it does not make you “too much”.

Start by noticing, not judging

Try a simple check-in: “Something is happening in me right now.” Notice where you feel it in your body, then choose a word that is close enough. Sad, cross, worried, embarrassed, excited, lonely, or tired are all useful starting points. You do not have to find the perfect label.

Feelings are information, not instructions

A feeling may point towards a need: rest, space, reassurance, food, connection, movement, or help. It can be useful information without being a command. You can feel angry and still choose not to hurt someone. You can feel nervous and choose one small, safe next step.

A tiny reset

Put both feet on the floor. Look for five ordinary things around you. Take one comfortable breath, without forcing it. Then ask: “What would make the next ten minutes a little kinder?”
